Subject: Message from the Director-General – Budget Update

Dear Staff
These are difficult economic times both at the State and Federal level. With a reduction in GST revenue of $5.2 billion over the next 4 years on top of reductions in other forms of revenue, the NSW Government has put in place some significant savings, including a Labour Expense Cap across all portfolios.

As a result of ongoing efficiencies and the introduction of the Labour Expense Cap we will have to make changes to the way we operate to ensure we remain within our budget, this financial year, and into the future.

We have developed a range of measures that we believe will help us meet our budget, while having the least impact on the learning outcomes of students in our schools, TAFE colleges and on other services we deliver to the community.

We have started realigning our state office, and we will soon be consulting about replacing our regional model with a different structure. There will also be changes within TAFE NSW. This will not be an easy process and different parts of the Department will be affected in different ways. There will be consultation with staff and stakeholders about the changes.

Your manager will contact you within the next week with more information and advice about any realignment process that will be undertaken in your area. There are some frequently asked questions and other helpful information on the intranet to assist you during this change process.

You can read more about this and other savings measures here.

Times like these can be stressful. You can seek professional confidential counselling through the Department’s Employee Assistance Program if you need additional support.
I thank you for your patience and support while we make these difficult changes. I know that all of you are dedicated to delivering and supporting quality services to students and the NSW community.

Kind regards
Dr Michele Bruniges AM
