Letter To Minister

Mr Adrian Piccoli, MP
Level 34 Governor Macquarie Tower

9th July 2012

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to bring your attention to the continuing unrest of many Operators with the Assisted School Travel Program. Individually and as a group we have tried unsuccessfully to have these issues addressed leaving us little choice but to seek help from you directly.

As of last week, this unit is now under the direction of yet another Department who will no doubt also need time to learn its operational procedures. We have been patient due to the extra work load experienced by staff at the Unit but it is now June and to date, not even one of the few simpler requests has been resolved.

This is not just a matter “a few disgruntled operators”. To paraphrase most operators “……..this is the worst it’s ever been” and “….they always just do whatever they like”. The latter being the crux of all problems. I have had personal contact with over a hundred operators who have all relayed to me the high level of unrest and dissatisfaction amongst other operators.

There are too many issues to fully explain in this letter so we ask that you, or a representative from your office, please meet with us to discuss these issues in detail. We are also requesting that the “business” rules currently being worked on are done with consultation from operators and to include accurate and transparent definitions, explained using working examples.

Sir, you only need to look at how much was needed to raise the old rates to make them now “fair and reasonable”, to understand just how much stress and financial hardship operators have been suffering for the last five years. Now, with the unexpected use of obscure reinterpreted clauses, inflexible mapping and newly introduced procedures, this “give with one hand and take back with the other” makes operators feel deceived. Having even less security with these now unstable rates, many have, or are considering resigning. This would be an unjust ending for those who have helped keep this program running for years at their own expense.

Yours Sincerely

Rhonda Hinds
